Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill is a growing suburban town located in Southern Ontario, about 20km from Toronto’s downtown core. It’s today the third most populous municipality in York Region and the 28th most populous municipality in Canada. Thornhill
Thornhill is a suburban community lying along North York’s northern border and south of Richmond Hill. It was once a police village but is now a thriving community but with lower-tier municipal governance. Thornhill was founded in 1794 when Benjamin Thorne arrived from England. He opened a gristmill, sawmill, and tannery gave the settlement the name Thorne’s Mills and later, Thorne’s Hill. Thornhill is located along Yonge Street, a major transportation route that helped a lot with the community’s growth in the twentieth century. It was the implementation of the electric radial Metropolitan line along Yonge Street that let people reside in Thornhill and work in Toronto.
Woodbridge
Woodbridge is a large, suburban community in Vaughan, Ontario, along the city’s border with Toronto. It was initially an independent town that later amalgamated with nearby communities to form the city in 1971. The city is humid with a continental climate where the summers are warm and humid, while winters are cold and snowy. The winters are freezing, with maximum temperatures remaining under -10 degrees C. Whitchurch-Stouffville
Whitchurch-Stouffville, sometimes referred to as only Stouffville, is a town located in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. It’s about 50km north of Toronto and 55 km north-east of Toronto Pearson International Airport. The city spans 206.22 sq km in area on the ecologically sensitive Oak Ridges Moraine. There’s Davis Drive in the north, York-Durham Line in the east, and Highway 404 in the west. Its motto was ‘country close to the city’ since 1993, and the town’s growth has grown to 21.8% between 2011 and 2016. The town’s future growth is governed by three statutes, created to prevent any urban sprawling on environmentally sensitive land. Its future growth is also termed ‘sustainable development,’ reflecting small-town tradition between city and country.
Newmarket
Newmarket is a town of 84,000 (2016) located halfway between Toronto and Barrie along Highway 11/Yonge Street. It’s surrounded by the towns Uxbridge on the east, Aurora in the south, East Gwillimbury in the north, and Schomberg in the east. Its Main Street Conservation District comprising several historic sites houses the city’s main tourist features. . Newmarket covers about 38 km2 and is approximately bound by St. John’s Sideroad (south), Bathurst Street (west), Green Lane (north), and Leslie (east). Even today, many residents of Newmarket travel about 45 minutes south to Toronto. The town was first a farming community and industrial center on the Northern Railway. According to its Official Plan, the town experienced a growth in the business services, administrative, manufacturing, retail sectors, and knowledge industries.
Aurora
The town Aurora is in the central York Region of the Greater Toronto area. It’s north of the City of Richmond Hill and partially situated on the Oak Ridges Moraine. According to the 2016 census, Aurora’s municipal population was the 95th largest in Canada. It climbed two steps since the 97th position it had in the 2006 census. However, the town has grown eastwards starting in the early 21st century. Since then, the town has grown consistently, with new developments pulling the town’s economic focal point eastwards towards Highway 404. The town centred mostly on its historic downtown core for most of the 20th century. It is now one of the top-ranked of the 10 wealthiest towns in Canada. The town is famous for preserving its history and was awarded many awards for this. Thanks to its heritage conservation and promotion, the town was designated a provincial Heritage Conservation District in 2006.
North York
Toronto, Ontario, Canada has six administrative districts, and North York is one of them. It’s in the north of York, East York, and Old Toronto, with Etobicoke lying to the west and Scarborough to the east. North York was first a township in 1922 but is now one of Toronto’s major corporate areas. Metropolitan Toronto included it in 1954 and, thanks to its proximity to Old Toronto, it’s one of the fastest-growing parts in the region. First a borough in 1967, North York soon started attracting high-density residences, rapid transport, and corporate headquarters after becoming a city in 1979. Scarborough
Scarborough lies atop the Scarborough Bluffs, on the city’s eastern part. Victoria Park Avenue lies to its west, Steeles Avenue and Markham to the north, Pickering and Rouge River to the east, and Lake Ontario to the south. The Europeans settled here in the 1790s and named it after England’s North Yorkshire’s Scarborough. Since then, Scarborough has grown from small rural villages and farms to a diverse and cultural community. It was made a township in 1850 and became a part of Metropolitan Toronto in 1953. It was in 1967 that it was reconstituted as a borough. Scarborough and the rest of Metropolitan Toronto were amalgamated to the present city of Toronto in 1998. It’s now a popular destination for new Canadian immigrants, and boasts of diverse and multicultural areas. Scarborough is home to various religious groups and places of worship. It also boasts of numerous natural landmarks like the Toronto Zoo, Scarborough Bluffs, and Rouge Park. But it’s northeastern corner is mostly rural, with most of Toronto’s remaining farms.
Etobicoke
Suburban Etobicoke was amalgamated with Scarborough, York, Toronto, and North York to become Toronto’s city in 1998. The word Etobicoke is from the native word meaning ‘place where alders grow.’ The suburb has about 1,600 acres of parks and diversified industries. It’s also home to various lakefront parks, conservatory tropical plants, golf courses, and the vast Centennial Park. Montgomery’s Inn of the 1830s has a museum, tea room, and pub and hosts a weekly farmers’ market. The City Centre West Area is however a busy commercial hub with shopping complexes, casual eateries, and history-themed murals.
East York
East York lies in the southeastern part of Ontario, Canada, and amalgamated with Etobicoke, York, North York and Scarborough to become Toronto. East York is a planned industrial and residential urban complex. It was established in the year 1967 through the amalgamation of East York Township. East York Township was created in 1924 from York Township and Leaside town. The two communities were first linked by a viaduct over the Don River in 1927.
Pickering
Pickering is an outer suburb on Lake Ontario, bordering Toronto, and shares its name with Pickering in North Yorkshire, England. It boasts of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, Pickering’s largest employer. The station generates 4.12 gigawatts, enough to power the Greater Toronto Area. In the 1970s, the city of Toronto expanded to surpass Montreal to become Canada’s largest city. This was when traffic through Pickering started steadily increasing. Now a city, the township was incorporated only in 1974. Though a major airport was proposed, it has never materialized because of continual and robust opposition since the mid-1970s.
Ajax
Ajax is a town in the Durham Region located midway of Oshawa and Toronto. It was established in 1941 as a wartime munitions production center after splitting from Pickering Township. It then had a workforce of 9000 people filling 40 million shells for the war. The University of Toronto then briefly used the factory as a technical school to train 7000 engineers. Ajax, however, grew into a bedroom community for Toronto, hosting various industries after the war. It’s now a growing Greater Toronto Area with more than 110,000 people. The town is named after a World War II Royal Navy cruiser responsible for the first major British war victory. The town elected the first town council in 1954. The annexure of Pickering village to Ajax took place after creating the Durham region on January 1, 1974.
Whitby
Whitby is a suburb, and the heart of the Durham region, east of Toronto in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto area of Ontario and west of Oshawa. Whitby was named after the fishing town of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. It was once the secret spy training facility Camp X established by the ‘Man Called Intrepid’ during the Second World War. Three years after getting chosen as the government seat for the new County of Ontario, the town was incorporated in 1855. However, it was only in 1836 that Whitby’s founder, Peter Perry, established a downtown business center.
Oshawa
Oshawa is a city located in southern Ontario and east of Toronto. The name originates from the Ojibwa term aazhaway, meaning ‘the crossing place.’ Oshawa was long best known for manufacturing motorcars. It once housed the massive auto manufacturer facility McLaughlin Motor Car Company Limited in 1907. The factory became General Motors Canada in 1918 but gradually closed down through the 2010s. This ended a 112-year history that inspired Oshawa’s motto, ‘The City in Motion.’ Oshawa then transitioned into an education and health sciences hub.
